British Blackjack Rules: How To Play Blackjack With 7 Cards

British Blackjack is an exciting card game that offers an engaging twist. Although it shares a moniker with the traditional casino game, British Blackjack is an entity on its own, with its own unique rules.

Unlike the well-known game where players aim for a hand sum of 21, British Blackjack sees players striving to discard all their cards by matching the suit or rank of the previously played card. Let’s delve deeper into this fascinating game.

What Is British Blackjack?

British Blackjack, also known as the 7 Card Game, is a distinct card game played with a single deck or more, depending on how many people are playing. Each player receives seven cards, and the remaining deck is placed face-down; this constitutes the discard pile.

The aim is to get rid of every card in your hand by matching either the suit or the rank of the last card played. The game tests quick thinking and strategy, and the first player to discard all their cards wins.

How to Play Blackjack with 7 Cards

The game of British Blackjack commences with the player to the dealer’s left and proceeds in a clockwise direction. To start, the top card of the discard pile is turned face up.

On their turn, players must match either the rank or the suit of the last played card to place a card on the discard pile. They may continue placing cards to make as long a run as possible during that turn.

For example, if the discard pile shows a 7 of hearts, a player could play a 7 of spades, then an 8 of spades, then an 8 of diamonds, and so on. Higher-value cards may only be played if they match the suit of the previous card.

If a player cannot continue the run, they must draw a card from the discard pile.

British Blackjack Card Game Rules

Certain cards in British Blackjack have special meanings, which add extra excitement to the game.

  • A ‘2’ Card: Playing a ‘2’ forces the next player to pick up 2 cards or play another ‘2’. This cycle continues until a player cannot play a ‘2’ and must pick up the total accumulated cards.
  • Black Jack: Playing a black Jack forces the following player to pick up 5 cards unless they also play a black Jack, in which case the next player must pick up 10. Placing a red Jack on a black Jack neutralises its effect.
  • A ’10’ Card: Playing a ’10’ reverses the direction of play. If the first card turned over is a ‘7’, play starts with the player on the right rather than the left. Play continues in the new direction until another ’10’ is played.
  • An ‘8’ Card: Playing an ‘8’ causes the next player to miss their turn.
  • Ace: Playing an Ace lets you choose which suit must be followed next. An Ace cannot be used to neutralise the effects of a ‘2’, a Jack or an ‘8’.

What Is Stick & Twist in Blackjack?

In traditional blackjack, “stick” and “twist” are terms players use to indicate whether they will keep their current hand or take another card. “Stick” means the player keeps their hand, while “twist” means the player takes an additional card. These are simply alternative terms for Stand and Hit.

In British Blackjack, however, the terms are not used in the same way. That variant centres on eliminating cards rather than trying to reach a specific total, so the usual hit or stand choices do not apply.
